Best IVF Clinics

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a lab-based procedure for getting pregnant that can be more precise and successful than conceiving naturally. With IVF, eggs and sperm are united outside the womb.

Once the embryo matures to a certain stage, one or more embryos are implanted in the mother or a surrogate in hopes of her carrying to full term.

How effective is IVF?

IVF can be extremely effective depending on the fertility issue(s) you’re experiencing. There are virtually countless factors that determine how effective IVF may be for you on your journey to having a baby, including age, fertility issue, etc.

There are also choices during the process—donor versus non-donor eggs, frozen versus unfrozen eggs, single embryo transfers (eSET) versus double embryo transfers (2BET)—that affect results. Your doctor will be able to offer more insight into whether or not IVF is a promising option for you.

How do IVF clinics work?

IVF clinics are where you go to get each part of the IVF procedure performed. They include laboratory and healthcare facilities.

More and more, fertility clinics are able to provide fertility treatment from diagnosis to intervention.

What is a good IVF success rate?

Unfortunately, there is no specifically “good” success rate for IVF as they vary widely based on circumstance—age, fresh or frozen eggs, donor or non-donor eggs, etc.

You should consult your doctor for the average success rate in your unique situation.

How are IVF success rates calculated?

The IVF success rate can be calculated a few different ways. The most valuable number is live birth rate, rather than pregnancy rate as miscarriages are common in all types of pregnancies.

However, this may be calculated per cycle or overall per individual. Some clinics even report chemical pregnancies, simply defined as an elevation of the pregnancy hormone in the body after implantation, as “successes.”

The best resources for data on IVF success rates are the Center of Disease Control (CDC) at cdc.gov/art or the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) at sart.org/clinic-pages/find-a-clinic. Both offer apples to apples data points for all reputable clinics.

What makes the best IVF clinics stand out?

While success rate is often used as a comparison point in identifying the “best” IVF clinics, one clinic may not stand out for this alone. Factors like facility, technology, services provided and overall how a facility treats patients are all extremely important parts of a great fertility clinic.

The best clinics are rooted in research, up to date with technologies and diligent about treating each patient as an individual.

Do insurance companies pay for IVF?

IVF is not generally covered by insurance. However, some countries are beginning to cover IVF through insurance.

Even if IVF is not covered, you may be able to get some insurance coverage for things like fertility medications. It’s always wise to check with your provider to see what may be available.

How much does IVF cost without insurance?

On average, once cycle of IVF in the US costs about $12,000–$15,000. This may or may not include costs for fertility medications, donor eggs, etc. Many couples need more than one round of IVF to be successful.

Is there an age limit to IVF?

IVF is not generally successful in women over 45. Most clinics will not provide IVF to women aver 42 (sometimes 45) using their own eggs.

Older women may choose to freeze eggs earlier on and use a surrogate to carry the baby to term.

Can IVF be successful the first time?

While IVF often takes multiple cycles to be successful, it can definitely be successful the first time. The chances of being successful with one round of IVF are influenced by the fertility issue you are trying to overcome with the procedure.

What is the general success rate of IVF clinics in USA?

The average success rate for women under 35 who go through IVF hovers around 40% in the US. Your chances may be higher or lower based on your unique profile.
